Perched on a rock in the emerald waters of Weligama Bay, this tear-shaped private island is only 200 yards off the southern coast of Sri Lanka but is a world apart. The tiny island is home to a colonial-style house which sleeps 10 and can only be booked by a single party. Lovingly restored and modernised, the octagonal structure retains the faded glamour and charm of a bygone era. This octagonal Paladian style villa was built by the Count de Mauny in the 1920’s and it is here that he entertained his friends in the grandest of style.

The house is still wonderfully elegant with large high ceilinged rooms furnished with colonial antiques and charming prints and maps of Old Ceylon. There are 5 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms, huge verandas and balconies and a stunning infinity pool. The house is fully staffed and is well situated for exploring the southern coast of the country. There are several sun terraces with Indian Ocean views and a small infinity pool. Taprobane was hit by the tsunami and although open again for business it is probably best to travel from November onwards when the new season begins. |
