| Film icon Brigitte Bardot is one of the best embodiments of St Tropez style--sexy, barefoot and glamorous. Brigitte Bardot and Ursula Andress started the craze in itty bitty bikinis that shocked even the Europeans in the 50s. By the 60s, the trend toward toplessness became a steamroller, and now just about any beach along the Riviera is topless tolerant. |
Some would consider the French Riviera the birthplace of topless tanning, and although the beaches tend to be rocky, the glamour quotient more than makes up for it (renting a chaise lounge will take care of the rock problem).
The best time to travel there is during July and August, where you'll see such Saint-Tropez regulars like Joan Collins, Naomi Campbell and Roman Abramovich. Saint Tropez is known for its beaches, and there are plenty of options for folks with families who wish to keep their modesty intact. The Côte d'Azur town is packed in summer. Avoid arriving on weekends, especially if you don't have hotel reservations.
The Hotel La Tartane is a small quality hotel set just outside St Tropez that offers accommodation at reasonable prices. The rooms are beautifully furnished with a modern but French spa appeal.
For those who wishes to be indulged, the Hotel Residence De La Pinede is a charming waterfront resort incorporating a pastel Mediterranean villa set on a beach amid pine trees. It's within easy walking distance to St. Tropez but yet out of the hustle of the port.
