The Phi Phi Islands are famous for their fine sandy beaches and their limestone cliffs soaring from the sea into the sky form some of the most unique topography on this planet. Add to this spectacular scenery crystal clear water, no traffic and a tropical laid back lifestyle, and it's easy to see why Koh Phi Phi is one of southern Thailand's most popular destinations. At least an overnight stay is recommended to really enjoy the islands, especially in the early morning and evening when the magic of the place really comes alive. Snorkelling around the many coral reefs or climbing to one of the karst limestone lookouts is an brilliant experience. |
Koh Phi Phi: Phi Phi Don Island
Phi Phi Don is the largest of the Phi Phi islands, and offers some of the most alluring sights in the region. Phi Phi Don is comprised of two main sections, peculiarly connected by narrow strip of glittering white sand; a good overview can be had from the famous Phi Phi Viewpoint. Furthermore, Phi Phi Don offers spectacular beaches and gleaming, turquoise seas, and remarkable landscapes.

This reputation has brought a tremendous growth in visitor numbers, but regardless of the commercial expansion, Phi Phi Don still remains one of the most magnificent places in the region.
Most of the budget and standard accommodation is located around the main ferry port of Tonsai - also the place for nightlife with films and music at the local bars. Other beaches on the island can be easily reached by local boat, and accommodation tends to be more upmarket with better quality hotels in the more secluded areas. Local dive companies offer diving and snorkelling trips around Phi Phi and the neighbouring islands with equipment for hire.
Koh Phi Phi: Phi Phi Ley Island
The second largest of the Phi Phi Island chain, Phi Phi Ley, is extremely beautiful, and pristine. Day trips to Phi Phi Ley are available, and one of the biggest attractions is Phaya Naak Cave, or Viking Cave, which has some bonafide prehistoric carvings. Another attraction to Phi Phi Ley are the nests of the edible-nest swiftlet, which fetch up to USD 2,000 per kilogram. Armed guards stand watch over these nests, and to protect from poaching, overnight stays on Phi Phi Ley are forbidden.
The island has two magnificent beaches, Loh Samah and Maya Bay; recently, the motion picture The Beach, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, was filmed on Phi Phi Ley, giving viewers a mere glimpse of the truly breathtaking scenery this island has to offer.

Another attraction to Phi Phi Ley is the abundance of shallow blue-green lagoons full of multi-coloured fish and coral gardens, which makes for some extraordinary scuba diving and snorkeling.
Neighboring Islands of Koh Phi Phi
Koh Yung (Mosquito Island): This small island in the Phi Phi chain is a few kilometers north of Phi Phi Don, and has two small beach areas. Much like Phi Phi Don, and Phi Phi Ley, Koh Yung offers visitors some fabulous scenery, both underwater and above and is very suitable for snorkelling tours. Day trips are available to Koh Yung from Phi Phi Don, and feature some brilliant views of pristine coral fields.
| Koh Phai (Bamboo Island): A just 700 meters long island in the Phi Phi chain that can be visited during the day by boat. Koh Phai offers some tremendously attractive scenery, with small beaches on the north and east side and coral gardens off the south end. However, like Koh Yung, this pristine island is uninhabited, and has no accommodations. Koh Bida Nai and Koh Bida: Small islands visited mainly by divers for their underwater scenery. Koh Bida Nok is very good for both advanced and beginners with both shallow and deep dive sites. |
